Division announces new funds for school exterior grounds development

Posted on:

Northern Gateway Public Schools will direct funds to all NGPS schools for 2017-18 school year for new capital projects to improve school grounds.

A new draft capital finance plan was presented to trustees during the May 23 board meeting outlining an allotment of $200 per student for each school which will be put into capital reserves for future exterior ground development projects.

NGPS superintendent Kevin Andrea shared that the Alberta Ministry of Education's recent decision to start funding school playgrounds led to NGPS considering what it could do for exterior ground funding.

"We are looking at the availability of resources and needs across the division from playgrounds and benches to walkways, ground cover and other exterior enhancements."

The Capital Plan is also funding several projects separately including:

• Year one: $262,000 for paving at the Elmer Elson Elementary School parking lot

• Year one: $168,000 for Onoway High School track

•Year one: $168,000 for Hilltop High School track

• Year two: $300,000 for a partial paving at Sangudo Community School parking lot

• Year three: $300,000 for a partial paving at Mayerthorpe High School parking lot.

• Year three: $168,000 for Mayerthorpe High School track

• Year three: $168,000 for Percy Baxter School track
