Human Sexuality Education

Background

Alberta Education has mandated human sexuality education. However, the sensitivity of this subject suggests that special effort must be taken to assure that parents and staff are comfortable with the program.

Human sexuality education shall be available to students from grades 4 to 9 under the Alberta Education Health program and through the Career and Life Management course in high school.

Procedures

  1. Instruction is to be provided by a teacher or by a qualified resource person, approved by the principal, under the supervision of a teacher.
  2. As per Administrative Procedure 205 Sensitive/Controversial Issues and Materials, before a program is initiated, parents shall be given adequate opportunity to review learning resources and teaching concepts.
  3. Students shall be excused from class attendance on written parental request and the teacher shall provide for an alternate meaningful instructional program.
