English As A Second Language

Background

The Division believes in providing programs for students who require instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL).  The objective of ESL programs shall be to facilitate the integration of students with English as a Second Language needs in to the regular classroom, school programs and community activities,.

Procedures

  1. The Principal shall be responsible for ensuring students requiring an English as a Second Language program are registered, assessed using Alberta K-12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks, and programmed for accordingly, with attention given to the linguistic, cultural and academic needs of the student(s).
  2. The Principal shall ensure that the ESL programming is provided in accordance with the Alberta Education Program of Studies using appropriate learning and teaching resources and is monitored regularly.
  3. The Principal shall ensure that appropriate student evaluation practices are implemented.
  4. The Principal shall ensure that an individual plan (IPP) is maintained for eligible students.
