COVID-19 Information for Families and Staff

ALL K-12 CLASSES CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

On March 15, 2020, the Government of Alberta announced a province-wide school closure, canceling all classes indefinitely.

This means:

  • all classes, Kindergarten to Grade 12, are canceled until further notice.
  • all school pre/playschool programs are canceled until further notice.
  • community use of school facilities is canceled until further notice.

We understand that school closures have a profound impact on families and that parents have many questions. We appreciate your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times.

Letter to Parents from the Minister of Education, March 20, 2020

PLAYGROUNDS CLOSED

All playgrounds on NGPS property are closed to the public indefinitely, to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. We ask families to say off playgrounds as play structures are not cleaned or sanitized.

CONTINUING STUDENT LEARNING

On March 20, 2020, the Government of Alberta released new Content Delivery Guidelines to direct how students will learn while in-school classes are canceled.

  • All Kindergarten to Grade 12 students, regardless of their geographic location or socioeconomic status, will receive at-home learning opportunities, either through online means or through other accommodations, such as course packages and telephone check-ins.
  • The Education Minister affirmed that every K-12 student will receive final grades and a report card for the 2019-2020 school year and that students who were on track to progress to the next grade, will do so.
  • Provincial Achievement Tests and Grade 12 Diploma Exams are canceled.

NGPS staff have been working hard to re-envision learning within this new context, adapting lessons for online formats, planning for ongoing technology needs and keeping students and parents informed. Learn more!

Learning will continue through a variety of online learning platforms, telephone calls, emails and learning packages. All students and families have been contacted by their school and/or teachers to discuss their learning plan going forward.

Questions & Answers - Alberta Education Continuity Plan (QA)

STAYING CONNECTED

Teachers will connect with parents as necessary and are available via email, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Please note, teachers will also be preparing and delivering lessons during these hours and may not be able to respond immediately.

Students can communicate directly with their teacher via email: firstname.lastname@ngps.ca.

STUDENTS’ BELONGINGS

Schools are contacting families to let them know when they are able to pick up student's belongings. Pick-up times will be staggered to ensure we’re supporting safe social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

QUESTIONS ABOUT SCHOOL FEES

We have received a number of questions about fees and refunds for the remainder of the year. We appreciate that during this time of uncertainty, families are looking for clarification and direction on all impacts of class cancelation.

NGPS collects a variety of fees from student transportation to instructional services to student activity fees. In most cases, fees paid will be refunded fully or on a pro-rated basis contingent on the nature of the service or the activity involved.

Generally, inquiries about school-based activity fees can be directed to the school site.

For fees associated with student transportation or personnel/program related fees (ie. full day Kindergarten or pre-school) refunds will be calculated, processed and mailed when classes resume or June 30th, whichever comes first.

Should you have any further questions, please contact your local school Principal or the office of the Secretary-Treasurer at 780-778-2800, or toll-free at 1-800-262-8674.

STAFF

Our Division is implementing a work-from-home protocol. Some critical staff remain in our facilities. This decision aligns with new public health measures that include restrictions on gatherings of more than 15 people.

Staff who are sick, including those with mild cold symptoms, are expected to stay home and follow all guidance from Alberta Health Services.

MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS

This is a stressful time for many Albertans. Resources are available if you, or someone you know, is struggling or needs a little extra support, or advice on handling the stress, or ways to talk to children.

STAY UP TO DATE

In pandemic circumstances, our Division is guided and directed by Alberta Health Services and the Government of Alberta (GOA). For the most up-to-date information on COVID-19, please refer to:
