Welding, Dancing, Baking and Building our way into Summer!

Over 220 students from Onoway to Valleyview have signed up for NGPS' Career Exposure Summer Camps, a stat that NGPS is happy to see increase year after year.

Superintendent Kevin Bird shares, “This program has real value for students from exploring personal interests and earning credits, to gaining skills and learning more about themselves and what they want to do in the future. And at no cost to families. It’s great to see so many students taking advantage of the opportunity.”

The camps run every year in late June and early July and are open to students in Grades 9-12, from any school division. There is no cost to register for a camp, and free school bus transportation is provided for students to and from Hilltop Jr/Sr High School in Whitecourt each day from Onoway, Sangudo, Mayerthorpe, Fox Creek and Valleyview.

Bird shared that division learning coordinators are “excited for a new year and grateful to our community partners, staff and instructors who continue to invest in these learning opportunities making them accessible for all students.”

A full course line up of returning favourites, as well as some exciting new camps, include Industrial Safety (earning tickets), Baking, Travel, Wildlife Studies, Construction, Welding, Forensic Science, CALM 20, Forestry Fundamentals and Dance. There’s also Hairstyling and Aesthetics, Construction, Art & Design, Creative Writing, Photography and Automotives. And more!

NGPS Learning Director, Beth Jager, "The concentrated hands-on learning opportunities that our teachers provide students with during the Career Exposure Summer Camps are essential in supporting students in future career path goals. For some, it is a refinement of skills, interests and directions, and for some it becomes clear that they will not be pursuing the path they thought. Both are very valuable realizations. We are fortunate to have a passionate and diverse staff to be able to offer a variety of opportunities and the support of our partners is essential in continuing to offer these learning experiences."

Career Exposure Summer Camps are made possible with the support of RBC Foundation, Pembina Pipeline, Town of Whitecourt, Woodlands County, and Careers: Next Generation.

This year’s camps run June 30 to July 4, and July 7-11.
