Teachers/Labour Update

Update: October 8, 2025

  • Financial support for parents

The Government of Alberta has announced financial support for parents. If your child is 12 or under and attends a public, separate, or francophone school affected by the disruption, you may qualify for a non-taxable payment of $30 per child, per day. The portal to apply for payments will launch on October 14. Parents will need their student's ASN (Alberta Student Number) to apply. Your can look up your child's ASN on the government registry, find it on their report card, or contact your child's school.

Update: October 5, 2025

Effective tomorrow, October 6, teachers across Alberta are on strike. This means that all NGPS schools are closed to students until further notice, and school buses do not run.

We know this is a challenging time for many, and we appreciate your support as we move through this provincial process together. We will continue to communicate updates as new information becomes available here and on social media. You can reach Division Office any time via email at learn@ngps.ca or by phone at 780.778.2800. There is also an emergency after-hours line: 780.706.8222.

The Government of Alberta is providing support during a strike by offering funding for families and learning materials for at-home use.

Government supports for parents during school closure

Update: October 1, 2025

The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and the Provincial Government have not reached an agreement on a new contract. Consequently, the ATA has announced plans to strike starting Monday, October 6, 2025. It is important to note that Northern Gateway Public Schools is not involved in this provincial bargaining process. Negotiations are held between the Government of Alberta, through their bargaining association, TEBA, and the ATA.

Although the specific form of labour action may change, it is currently understood that the ATA will launch a full strike beginning October 6, 2025. This means all Northern Gateway schools will be closed to students starting October 6 until further notice.

Families will need to find alternative childcare and supervision. We anticipate that, during the planned strike action beginning October 6th:

  • All teachers, school Principals, and Assistant Principals will participate in the
strike and therefore will not be at work.

  • Students will not be attending school.

  • While schools are closed for regular operations, there will still be some activities
    in the buildings, including:
    -  Support staff reporting to work
    -  Child Care providers and Junior Kindergarten Programs
    -  Community joint-use (which could include before and after school care
operators or other outside organizations running programming).

The Government of Alberta is providing support during a strike by offering funding for families and learning materials for at-home use.

Update: September 29, 2025

The tentative agreement negotiated between the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) bargaining committee and the Provincial government has been rejected by ATA members. As a result, some form of labour disruption, job action, or a strike is likely to begin on October 6.

While we remain hopeful that an agreement could still be reached before October 6, families should prepare for job action to begin on that date. Updates will continue to be posted here as new information becomes available.

NGPS has received news that the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) and the Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association have reached a tentative agreement. The ratification process, whereby teachers will vote on the proposal, will take place September 27 to 29, 2025, with results expected to be announced shortly thereafter.

Updates will continue to be posted here as well as on Division social media.

The Provincial Government and the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) have been in negotiations for several months. Last week, the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) provided formal notice to begin labour action on Monday, October 6, 2025, if a settlement is not reached before that date. The notice given by the ATA is a general strike impacting all Alberta school divisions.

Job action may take different forms, including a full strike. If a full strike does occur:

  • Students do not attend school and buses do not run
  • Childcare programs in schools can continue to operate
  • Junior Kindergarten programs continue to operate
  • Joint use (school user groups such as a club that uses a school gym) continues to operate

For now, there is no disruption to learning or any changes to normal operations.

NGPS remains hopeful that the Provincial Government and the ATA can reach a negotiated settlement soon. We are committed to keeping families and staff informed and will share updates through our website and social media as more information becomes available.

Mediator-supported bargaining continues between the Provincial Government and the Alberta Teachers’ Association. Northern Gateway Public Schools will continue to monitor the situation closely and follow the direction provided by the Government of Alberta. As of now, a 72-hour strike notice has not been filed to the Alberta Labour Relations Board. Parents and guardians will be informed of any changes or updates to school operations as soon as information becomes available.

As we approach the beginning of the 2025-26 school year, we hope for successful bargaining between the Province and the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA). This page will be updated as new information becomes available.

Posted June 12, 2025

From June 5 to 8, the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) held a province-wide strike vote. Approximately 95% of participating teachers voted in favour of strike action. While this does not mean a strike will happen, or happen right away, it gives the ATA the ability to begin strike action any time within the next 120 days, as long as they give 72 hours’ notice. At the time of this post, no strike notice has been given. We understand that more bargaining dates are scheduled this month.

Because this is a province-wide negotiation, any potential job action would affect all public school divisions in Alberta, including Northern Gateway.

At this time, there is no disruption to learning. Teachers remain committed to student learning,  and classes, exams, and year-end activities are continuing as planned.

We continue to monitor the situation between the ATA and provincial government and will update families and staff as information becomes available.

We value our teachers and the important work they do to support student learning and success within their schools and greater communities. We respect the bargaining process and are hopeful that a settlement will be reached without a disruption to student learning.
