Teacher Strike Vote Update

Posted on:

From June 5 to 8, the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) held a province-wide strike vote. Approximately 95% of participating teachers voted in favour of strike action. While this does not mean a strike will happen, or happen right away, it gives the ATA the ability to begin strike action any time within the next 120 days, as long as they give 72 hours’ notice. At the time of this post, no strike notice has been given. We understand that more bargaining dates are scheduled this month.

Because this is a province-wide negotiation, any potential job action would affect all public school divisions in Alberta, including Northern Gateway.

At this time, there is no disruption to learning. Teachers remain committed to student learning,  and classes, exams, and year-end activities are continuing as planned.

We continue to monitor the situation between the ATA and provincial government and will update families and staff as information becomes available.

We value our teachers and the important work they do to support student learning and success within their schools and greater communities. We respect the bargaining process and are hopeful that a settlement will be reached without a disruption to student learning.
