The Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) celebrated the outstanding achievements of 12 student recipients at their 2025 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award ceremony held in Edmonton in April. Selected from over 300 nominees, these students exemplify remarkable leadership, courage and dedication to their cultures and educational journeys.

Northern Gateway Public Schools was proud to nominate ten outstanding students from our school communities this year who model strength and commitment in the pursuit of their personal education paths:

We are excited to share that NGPS students, Cougar Desjarlais and Riley Mitchell, were two of 12 recipients to win this prestigious award!

Cougar is a Grade 6 student who is known for his positivity, natural leadership and kindness towards all. Cougar believes that education is a key tool in strengthening his O’Chiese community and aspires to be a role model for younger generations of Indigenous students. Cougar serves as student council president and captain of his intramural house league team. He is thoroughly engaged in learning about Indigenous history and cultures, and he wants people to feel connected through the circle of life.

Riley is a Grade 2 student celebrated for his “I Can” attitude, and for demonstrating incredible determination in every task. He consistently encourages his peers to be their best selves and leads by example, taking the initiative to include others and ensure no one feels left out. Riley is deeply proud of his Métis heritage; he values his cultural identity and loves to share his experiences and connections. Riley is passionate about helping others understand who he is and from where he comes. He models an appreciation for diversity and culture that encourages others to do the same, exemplifying cultural understanding and respect.

Congratulations to Cougar and Riley, and to all of our Division nominees!
